Whats with all the earthquakes lately?

i was just wondering if anyone has any knowledge to why we are having so many sporadic earth quakes? it seems to me like this is a huge deal if it can make the day just a tiny bit shorter ( like a millionth of seccond or something ). and knock chile a whole 10 feet west.
