Define: the word Racist?

No-one has called me racist but people sometimes use the word when it really isn't necessary. Like say if someone asks a question directed to a certain type of people then someone calls them racist. I don't think that's what it means. Isn't it when you direct derogatory terms and slanders towards a certain race? Please correct me if I am wrong.
